Tree planting at Old Banwell Road playing fields

North Somerset Council's road maintenance contractor planted new trees in Locking last month, as part of its social value commitment.

John Wainwright & Co. Ltd. has paid for 11 trees at Locking playing fields in Old Banwell Road, near Weston. It's part of Wainwright's ongoing commitment to social value and environmental sustainability, following its four year £3.5m-a-year contract for road maintenance here in North Somerset. The scheme aligns with our commitment to reducing carbon emissions and also utilising local skills, talent and supply chain partners. Locking playing fields was chosen for this planting due to its high recreational use and the numerous environmental and health benefits that trees provide.  Trees enhance air quality, offer shade, support biodiversity and encourage outdoor activities - all of which contribute to a healthier and more sustainable community.

As well as the 11 trees in Locking, Wainwright has also funded four new trees in Backwell. Wainwright is committed to planting 15 trees per year in North Somerset during its four-year contract with us. It has also committed to providing educational visits for schools and colleges at its Somerset Earth Science Centre
